Posted by: THAT Painter Lady in Start Your BusinessDo you want to know how to become a faux painting professional? How does a fake painter – those that do faux painting – fool your clients into thinking you are a professional when you are just starting out? Can you – fake it until you make it?
An artist dreams of making money doing what they love. Art! Professional Faux Painters know that you have to also think about the bottom line – profit – as well. Plus your clients must believe from the first moment they make contact with you… that you are a professional faux painter.
You must learn to act like a pro. Presenting yourself in a professional, confident manner in all aspects of your business life is a very important skill to learn. Along with all the other tasks you must put on your to-do list under the – learn to do this- column is "teach myself to look and act like a professional faux painting artist". It's all part of the faux… er, fake like a pro business life.
Setting your self up to be successful in the faux business takes some hard work and a little strategy. When you are finally not faking it, but actually doing what you love and making a profit… you won't be threatened by competition. In fact you will be so confident that you will find yourself offering to help others learn the faux finishing business.
Successful Faux Painting Artists have a few personality traits that you need to emulate.
- Believe in yourself. Stop being critical of yourself and others.
- Surround yourself with positive, successful people. If your friends and family aren't supportive… don't talk about your business and its goals. Spend time seeking out others in the faux biz online or in your community that will give you good, positive feedback.
- Read… Read…. Read. Get your hands on every decorative painting, trends, faux painting techniques and business success book, magazine and web site you can. Fill your brain and then cram in some more. Live and breathe faux painting… soon your vocabulary will change. You will be able to talk the talk and walk the walk just like the big guys.
- Successful professionals don't blame others for what they haven't accomplished. They take responsibility for their own actions. If you haven't achieved success yet… figure out what is missing and plug into it.
- Don't waste your time on unproductive activities. Watching T.V isn't going to get you any closer to your goal. Time spent learning how to take pictures of your faux painting jobs and posting them to a website, updating your portfolio or using them for advertising is time well spent.
- Think outside the box. This is easier said than done for new professional painters. Get into a faux painting forum and read what others are doing. Network with others in the biz, and soon the brainstorming will payoff. New ideas will be filling your head.
- Talk to everyone as if you already know what you are doing. A client that wants a finish that you aren't trained in or advice on color doesn't know what you don't know. Keep your face and voice from hesitating. You can bluff your way through if you have kept up on your reading.
If you’re not as successful as you think you should be, pretend that you are. Tell yourself and others that you have all the skills, confidence and ability to be a success and that you are a professional faux painting artist.
Fake it until you make it is only a quote… in your mind don't tell yourself you are a fake. Be as real as you can fake yourself into believing. Soon… it will come so natural that you won't have to be faux… fake.
Have fun and let your personality show through. If you are upbeat and happy about your new profession… your clients will be attracted to you and your art!

Thank you so much for these encouraging words! The older members of my family think I’m nuts wanting to learn a new trade aged 54, but I’m fed-up with working in boring offices! I’ve always loved painting rooms – my Dad & brother are both decorators, so it runs in the family – but because I can’t paint pictures, I never thought I could do anything more than straight forward interior decorating. Then suddenly, I discovered faux painting! I’ve enrolled on an Interior Design Course & plan to start a Decorative Painting course soon, but your tips have been so valuable to me. Wish me luck and thanks again!
